About Urban Child Institute

Learn about the founding and history of The Urban Child Institute.

Overview

The Urban Child Institute was created in 1995 as a result of Methodist Healthcare’s purchase of Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. Former Le Bonheur CEO, Gene Cashman, helped take the proceeds of the transaction and infuse them into the Memphis community — specifically to improve the health of women and children.

As a result, a new 501(c)(3) organization was created and registered to operate as a 509(c)(3), a charity that directly supports other tax-exempt organizations, including three core support organizations: Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital for children’s health, University of Tennessee Health Science Center for health education and research, and University of Memphis for capabilities in leadership training, business principles and nursing.

Our Mission

The Urban Child Institute is dedicated to promoting the education, health, and well-being of young children in Shelby County.
